Medical doctor and freelance translator

Before moving into the translation industry, I worked for over 10 years in the Corporate IT world and have a strong background in business communications and management. My experience as a translator is predominantly in the specialisms of Travel & Tourism, Business and some work in the Arts and Fashion industry.

My name is Vanessa Walsh and I'm currently working as a freelance translator and language teacher in Bavaria, Germany. I have an MA in Translation Sciences from the University of Heidelberg in Germany and a BA from Queen's University in Canada in Foreign Languages and Intl. Studies (French/German). I grew up in Ontario, Canada, and English is my mother language. I have many years of immersion in my source languages, years of uninterrupted translation experience, and an excellent command of English, my target language. I specialize in medical translation. Further experience includes literary, academic, website, and business/marketing translation, and I have translated several documents including novels, academic papers, scripts, business plans, and more, from FRA-ENG and DEU-ENG. I also work with technical translations and/or post-editing.

I offer over a decade of experience specializing in Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian to English translation, localization, subtitling, and interpretation. Prior work includes translating for Google, The New York Times, A-list celebrities, Fendi, EU-funded research projects, National Geographic docuseries, UNICEF videos, Dario Gioè's Journey to the Center of a Millennial, and localizing marketing materials and websites for international hotel chains. Finally, I've interpreted for the United States Anti-Doping Agency, immigration attorneys, asylum seekers, market researchers, and medical patients.

I've been freelance translating while completing my bachelors in Comparative Literature, alongside working on my own translation projects. I have a decent amount of experience translating poetry and other literary sources, which I believe have given me a lot of tools to translate any kind of text -- including marketing, scientific, and so forth. A brief bio: I was born in Belgium and moved to the United States when I was young, hence I was thrown early on into different languages. Today, I speak/read/write in English, Dutch/Flemish, German, French, and Italian. The exchange of information and ideas across linguistic and geographic borders greatly interests me, which is why, I believe, I enjoy translating texts so much. With English as my first language, I grew up in a bilingual country where I was exposed to both French and English, hence my excellent mastery of my source language. I studied microbiology at university, then obtained a postgraduate diploma to teach biology, which I have been teaching for six years now. As a science teacher and translator with three years` experience in the industry, I am able to handle a variety of texts, and am particularly interested in science-related fields. I have experience in medical, legal, economic/financial as well as editorial translation. I also translate certificates, transcripts and academic testimonials. I do not accept to work in fields which I do not master, and do not work into my source language because I could not guarantee the quality of the work. I look forward to working with you.

I've been born to German-speaking Austrian parents but was raised in English-speaking Canada. Due to this fact and to the fact that I competed my Master's in Austria, I am fluent in both languages and am fond of translating from German into English. Since 2000, when I started my translator's career, I've managed to translate millions of words in a great range of fields, from fiction to medicine.

I am a very experienced German, Spanish and French-speaking translator, localiser, proof-reader and editor of written texts from a wide variety of areas from those languages into English. I also have some experience in translating from English into German. To expand my skills and knowledge, I lived in France, Germany, Poland and Spain for a total of approximately 7 years. I have worked with translation agencies, local and international companies, NGOs, the UN and government agencies where I consistently delivered timely and accurate translations. In the 5 years where I have been in business, both as an in-house and a freelance translator, I have gained extensive experience in different fields such as commercial, legal, financial, technical and general translation. I am an advanced user of SDL Trados studio CAT tool, with proficient knowledge of Microsoft word, MemoQ, Across, Wordfast, among others.
